midrandtarpandtent.co.za

A 100-point scorecard of their existing site — SEO, performance, design, content, conversion.
44/100
Overall score

Mid-tier WordPress brochure-ware.

Ranks well below where 27 years of brand equity, a real Midrand factory, and a named founding family should put them. The bones are honest — real specs, real warranties, real address — but the site is invisible to AI search, leaks trust signals on every page, and converts on a three-field contact form any 2015 site could match.

01SEO + GEO (AI search) — 7/20

The site exists for 2018 Google. It is functionally invisible to GPT, Claude, and Perplexity.

7out of 20
  • No Schema.org structured data anywhere. Zero JSON-LD blocks on homepage or `/marquee-tents/`. No Organization, no LocalBusiness (the single biggest missed win — they are a single-location Midrand manufacturer), no Product schema on tent ranges, no FAQPage on the blog post that literally is structured as FAQs.
  • No llms.txt — returns 404. No AI-bot allowances in `robots.txt` either. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot are all undeclared.
  • Meta descriptions missing on homepage and About. Title tags are passive ("About Us – Midrand Tarp & Tent" instead of "Marquee Tent Manufacturer Midrand · Since 1999 · Midrand Tarp & Tent").
  • Sitemap has no lastmod dates — crawl priority is downgraded.
  • Alt text is half-done. Some images carry useful alt ("15m x 24m Marquee Peg & Pole oval") but many are just "Midrand Tarp and Tent" or empty — wasted across 52 images on a single page.
  • No Open Graph / Twitter Card meta. Every WhatsApp / Facebook / LinkedIn share renders as a bare link with no image. For a visual product, this is brutal.

02Performance — 8/20

WordPress + Revolution Slider is the worst-performing pattern still in the wild in 2026.

8out of 20
  • Revolution Slider on the homepage — historically 600 KB–1.2 MB of JS + CSS before a single product image renders. Render-blocking, known to wreck LCP on mobile.
  • No loading="lazy" detected on any of the 52 images on `/marquee-tents/`. Every product image loads on page entry, mobile or not.
  • Images unoptimised. Thin dividers being served as 1024px PNG. No <picture> tags, no srcset, no WebP/AVIF.
  • No CDN. Assets self-hosted off the SA origin server. Visitors outside Gauteng pay the latency.
  • No width/height attributes on most images → cumulative layout shift penalty.

Expected mobile Lighthouse: Performance 30–45, LCP > 4.5s, CLS > 0.2. Confirmable in 60 seconds at PageSpeed Insights.

03Design — 9/20

Not ugly, but tired. A 2017 WordPress theme kept alive rather than redesigned.

9out of 20
  • Hero is a Revolution Slider with three slides all saying variants of "HIGH QUALITY TARPS & TENTS FOR PEACE OF MIND Since 1999." Slider auto-rotation in 2026 is a known UX anti-pattern.
  • Photography is generic. Markup references `dummy.png` placeholders inside the slider config. No founder photo on About. No factory floor. No real Midrand wedding or church install. A 27-year manufacturer shooting a half-day with a real photographer would lift the whole site one full tier.
  • Typography is all-caps for nearly every heading ("WELCOME TO MIDRAND TARP & TENT", "LET US HELP MAKE YOUR NEXT EVENT UNFORGETTABLE…"). Shouty, dated, harder to read on mobile.
  • Brand asset in footer still credits "Bits & Bytes" with a `2017-Web` logo — the design system has not been refreshed since the original build.
  • White space is thin. The homepage stacks shouty headings, three FIND OUT MORE tiles, and a contact form with no breathing room.

04Content + Voice — 11/20

The best-performing category — and it still leaves 9 points on the table.

11out of 20

The product depth is real (gram weights, seating densities, warranty bands), but the human story — the actual reason someone picks them over BossTents — is completely missing.

  • No founder named anywhere. Noelene van Maarleveld does not appear on `/about-us/`. The site's `/author/peter_mtt/` archive surfaces Peter van Maarleveld — a family business, by the look of it — but About hides both behind "our experienced, dedicated, and highly skilled team." The single biggest authenticity lever (named, 27-year, family-run SA manufacturer) is invisible.
  • "Church discount" trust signal lives on the homepage but is missing from About where it would carry weight. Same with warranty bands (24mo marquee / 12mo product / 6mo repairs) — those belong in a sticky trust strip across every product page.
  • About copy is ~280 words and reads generic. "Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our craftsmanship and attention to detail" is a sentence any of 200 competitors could write. No origin story. No customer names. No churches served. No sports events covered.
  • Marquee Tents page has genuine product depth (PVC gram weights, seating density m²/person, four marquee families, custom colours) — this is gold and should be split into 4 dedicated product pages, each with its own URL, schema, and quote CTA.
  • Blog post quality is solid — 1,200 words, FAQ-structured, reads human, dated March 2025. But it's running with no Author schema, no FAQPage schema, and no internal links into product pages.
  • No testimonials, no client logos, no case studies anywhere on the site. For a B2B manufacturer with churches, mining, transport and hospitality clients, this is the single most fixable trust gap.

05Conversion — 9/20

Lead capture works, but only just.

9out of 20

No online quote tool, no portal, no order tracking, no e-commerce, no live chat, no WhatsApp click-to-chat — just a three-field WordPress form competing with companies that have all of the above.

  • Contact form is generic. Subject dropdown + Product dropdown + Message. The form may even be missing required fields (name, email, phone) in the rendered version. Either way: friction.
  • No real online quote tool. A customer wanting a 9×12 framed marquee in a custom colour cannot get even a ballpark price or lead-time online. Every SA competitor I checked has the same gap — this is an open lane to differentiate.
  • CTAs are weak. "FIND OUT MORE" and "GET A QUOTE" — generic. No "Quote in 24 hours" / "WhatsApp us a photo of your venue" / "Book a site visit" specificity.
  • WhatsApp button exists in footer — but no click-to-chat link with a pre-filled "Hi, I'd like a quote for…" message, and no WhatsApp number prominent in the hero.
  • No urgency, no scarcity, no lead-time signal. A church planning a December event has no idea whether to order in May or August.
  • Zero social proof anywhere in the funnel — no testimonials, no Google reviews embed (and they have a real Google Business profile — wasted).
  • Phone numbers are prominent and correct — this is the one conversion strength. Direct call still drives most of their leads, which is exactly why the rest of the funnel has been allowed to atrophy.

4–6 wks
Bottom line for Noelene

The site doesn't lie about who you are, but it also does nothing to prove it. The product knowledge, warranties, longevity and family-run pedigree are all genuine — and all under-broadcast. Fixes 1–6 take 4 weeks and move the score from 44 to ~75 without touching the portal. Fixes 7–10 are the next quarter and the actual moat.
