MT&T is a 27-year manufacturer doing roughly R 5–8m turnover on phone, email and PDF — like every direct competitor in South Africa. The first SA tarp & tent operator to ship a real workshop portal closes 5–7 specific cash leaks worth a conservative R 380k–R 620k/year in recovered revenue and time, and locks in their B2B fleet customers (BB Transport, Imperial, Anglo) on a digital surface no competitor can match. Build cost is in the TAC neighbourhood. Payback inside 12 months.
I pulled their website, About page, both Facebook pages, Instagram, company LinkedIn, Noelene's personal LinkedIn, her published article, business directory listings, review sites, ZoomInfo, and 10+ SA competitor sites. Six things matter for tomorrow.
Every easy-to-find SA tent reference is a hire/events company (Downings, GL Events, Tentickle). MT&T is structurally different: they make and sell PVC and canvas product, they don't run a marquee rental fleet. Their workflow is quote → fabricate → deliver → repair/refurbish. If we walk in with a "marquee booking calendar" we lose her in 30 seconds. The portal must be built around a fabrication pipeline.
Their tautliner-refurb work for transport fleets (BB Transport, Imperial Logistics) and tent refurbs for churches and funeral services is repeat B2B income. It's listed as the fourth bullet on their site, behind sales. This is the strongest argument for the portal: fleet customers with 10–20 trailer tarps in rotation desperately want a "where's my cover" view. Nobody in SA gives them that today.
Her self-written LinkedIn header is "CEO │ Manufacturer of high quality tents and tarpaulins". She wrote a long-form LinkedIn article on what to consider when buying a marquee — it talks GSM weights, material specs, fire retardants, warranty math. She responds to substance and quality language, not gloss. The pitch lands if we talk about cash leaks, manufacturing throughput, and Sage integration — not "beautiful UX."
Peter van Maarleveld writes the company blog (10+ posts since 2024). Relationship to Noelene isn't disclosed — could be husband, could be son. Don't assume — ask warmly. Why this matters: a portal is the bridge that lets a 27-year family business hand operations to the next generation without losing institutional knowledge. That's the emotional layer underneath the financial case.
Stylised text-graphics where real on-site job photos should be. Heavy reliance on a Revolution Slider hero. No quote tool, no portal, no e-commerce, no analytics signals. Their best photography sits on Instagram (@midtent) and never makes it to the website. Mention this gently — Bits & Bytes built this, and we don't burn the previous vendor.
Two Facebook pages (1,112 likes on the original vs 120 on the duplicate). No claimed Google Business profile. africanadvice rating 3.0/5 from 9 reviews — review content not visible. These three fixes alone are worth one warm afternoon of work and they're a confidence-building first deliverable before the portal build kicks off.
These are pulled from an industry workflow analysis of SA tent/tarp SMBs. Ranked by money impact. Each one maps directly to a specific view in the portal demo.
What's in the demo and why each piece exists. Open the portal in a second tab as you read this — each section maps to a specific screen you can click into.
Today she lives in WhatsApp threads, a paper diary on her desk, and Sage. The dashboard collapses all three into one page she opens with her morning coffee.
Status of any job lives in one of 4 places (Noelene's head, Peter's phone, the workshop wall, Sage).
Single dashboard. Jobs pipeline, week's deliveries, repair queue, deposits, top clients by lifetime spend.
Frees Noelene from being the only person who knows the state of the business. Bridge for succession.
180 banquet guests + 12×24m peg & pole + lining + church discount → quote on a client's phone before the call ends.
Peter quotes from his phone in the bakkie. 24–72hr turnaround. No version history. Maverick is the only SA tent company with a calculator — bare-minimum 2 fields.
Guest count + seating style → recommended size. Pre-priced catalog. Auto-applies church discount. Sage-ready line items. WhatsApp send.
Quote speed is the single biggest predictor of close rate in SA event hire. Cuts to 90s.
Every job in the workshop, drag-droppable, with cash value and days-to-due. A real picture of the next 6 weeks of revenue.
Twelve jobs in flight at any time, no visual map of where each one is, late-stage surprises (Curro deposit 7 days late).
Visual pipeline. Cards show client, product, value, days. Late-stage red flags surface instantly.
Noelene can see at 09:00 Monday which jobs need a phone call today. No more end-of-month surprises.
The screen that wins the meeting. Built specifically because repairs are MT&T's sticky B2B recurring revenue — and no SA competitor has anything like it.
BB Transport phones Peter every Tuesday: "Where are my 4 tautliners?" No system to answer. Repair turnaround invisible.
Stage tracker (Received → In repair → QC → Ready → Collected) with tech assignment, ETA, avg turnaround metrics.
Fleet customer retention. BB, Imperial, Anglo lock in. Damage-attribution audit trail. Competitive moat.
For the crew on the truck at 06:30 on Saturday. Phone-sized, offline-tolerant, big buttons.
Paper job sheets, photos on personal phones, no proof-of-condition. "It was already torn" disputes lose money.
Today's erection jobs, items checklist, mandatory photo before + after, GPS-stamped sign-off form.
Damage attribution. Insurance claims. Quality control. End of the "I called and you said it'd be ready" dispute.
Live warranty status on 23 covers, 4 items in the repair queue, one-click reorder, full job history back to 2011.
Fleet customers stuck with phone-and-email. Nobody in SA gives them a portal. Switching cost = zero.
Live job status, warranty register per-item, one-click re-quote, 30-day-terms invoice tracking.
The day BB logs in, switching cost goes from R0 to "we'd lose our whole repair history." This is the moat.
I checked every named SA tent/tarp operator I could find a website for. None of them has a real customer portal — not the events brands, not the industrial tarp brands. The category is wide open.
| Company | Position | Digital surface today |
|---|---|---|
| Midrand T&T (us) | Manufacturer · marquees + tarps + custom + repair | After build: live workshop portal, mobile crew, client login |
| Downings Marquee Rentals | Marquee hire | PDF brochure + contact form |
| GL Events SA | Marquee hire · biggest player | Multi-step consultation form, no self-service |
| Tentickle Stretch Tents | Stretch tent hire | Brochure + Issuu PDFs |
| TentWorx | Marquee hire | "Don't email — call us." Contact form only. |
| Maverick Tents | Marquee hire | Only SA tent co. with a calculator — 2 fields, no booking |
| Protarp (closest direct competitor) | Midrand tarp + marquee mfg | Brochureware |
| Aero Truck / Cytarps / ATS Tarps | Industrial tarp manufacturers | Phone + email · zero self-service for fleet clients |
The pitch line, if she pushes on competitive risk: "Every named tent operator in SA — Downings, GL Events, Tentickle, Protarp — is running on phone, email and PDF. The first to ship a real portal owns the digital surface of the category. We can do that for you, in Midrand, this year."
Same shape as TAC. Build fee per phase, monthly hosting/support across the lot. If she asks for total numbers, anchor on TAC and offer to put a real number together after a 60-minute working session next week.
Modernise the surface on her existing brand. Real photography from @midtent. Lead-capture quote form that lands in the portal database. Claim Google Business profile. Consolidate FB pages.
Quote builder, jobs pipeline, deposit tracking, Sage two-way sync, basic repair queue, WhatsApp message templates. Single Noelene + Peter login. The day-one core.
Sipho's mobile app (photo-on-erect, sign-off). Client login for BB Transport, Imperial, Anglo and the top 5 churches. Repair-queue visibility outward. Damage-attribution audit.
Monthly photo cadence from real jobs. WhatsApp follow-up automations (quote → deposit → erection week). SEO + GEO so "tent manufacturer Midrand" and "tautliner repair Joburg" rank.
All-in build budget envelope: ~R 145k over 3 phases. Pays for itself if the portal closes even half of one revenue leak from section 2. If she signals shock at the number, anchor on the R 380–620k/year recovery and the moat against zero-portal competitors.
Use these to test the intelligence above. If her answers contradict what I found, the pitch shifts.
Every claim above is sourced. Open any of these if you want to see the underlying signal.
